Coloured Overlays

Visual stress can be reduced by the use of coloured filters like coloured overlays or coloured lenses in spectacles (precision tinted lenses) assessed on an instrument called a colorimeter.

Coloured overlays are sheets of translucent coloured plastic that can be placed over printed text to colour the page beneath it. Coloured overlays reduce the perceptual distortions of text that children sometimes describe. They enable some children to read text more fluently and with less discomfort and fewer headaches. It is important to assess the effects of a wide range of colours because individuals do not all benefit from the same colour.

A coloured overlay assessment can help identify if a coloured overlay is likely to reduce perceptual distortions and improve reading ability. The assessment will also help identify the exact colour of the overlay that will make the best improvement.

If coloured overlays are successful over a 4 week period we would recommend a colorimetry assessment. Click here to find out more
