Dyslexia and Visual Stress Assessment

Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty, believed to affect up to 10% of people in the UK.

If you have dyslexia, you’re more likely to encounter certain eye problems, such as binocular vison issues and visual stress. We therefore offer a specialist assessment to help analyse whether any additional problems are contributing to your reading difficulties.

Problems with binocular vision – or eye coordination – can be detected through one of our comprehensive eye examinations and corrected accordingly. Visual stress – also known as Meares-Irlen Syndrome or Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome – refers to a group of symptoms, which together lead to headaches, light sensitivity or reading difficulties, especially when looking at printed text.

Easing the symptoms of visual stress.

The key symptoms of visual stress are moving/blurring words, glare from printed text and headaches and/or sore eyes when reading. This can result in the following issues when reading:

  • Excessive blinking or eye-rubbing

  • Poor concentration and inefficiency

  • Difficulty tracking words

Luckily, visual stress can be managed effectively using coloured overlays or lenses. Using a colorimeter, we can assess the exact colour required to ease the symptoms of visual stress, supplying you with handheld overlays or precision tinted lenses for your spectacles to improve your reading comfort and ability.
