Coloured Overlays

Symptoms of visual stress can be reduced by using coloured filters, which we can supply in the form of handheld overlays or spectacle lenses.

An overlay is a sheet of translucent tinted plastic, which you can position over printed text to colour the page beneath it. By reducing the perceptual distortions of text that children sometimes experience, they enable more comfortable and fluent reading, and help lessen the frequency of symptomatic headaches.

Not all individuals benefit from the same coloured overlay, so testing the effects of an array of different ones is an important step in our assessment. Our comprehensive test firstly determines whether an overlay is likely to reduce perceptual distortions and improve reading ability, and secondly – if treatment is deemed beneficial – which colour will make the best improvement.

We recommend that if your symptoms improve over four weeks of using an overlay, a colorimetry assessment would be beneficial for your longer-term visual stress treatment.
